Our family had made the trek across the state to the Kapok Tree Inn in Sarasota a few times between 1970-1980 and loved it each time. I remember the very large hurricane glasses they served drinks in. Sorry to see that the restaurant had to close, but happy that the buildings & grounds are still there.

This website is great. I was a waitress at Kapok Tree in Clearwater then promoted as a Dining Room Mngr to the Madiera Beach Kapok Tree. The Vinoy across the street was my favorite place for Sunday Brunch. The resturant was always busy the old time waiter/waitresses got 1st priority on which dining room they wanted to work. The Grand Ballroom was the best followed by the Florida Room and the Balcony.Great place to work.

Visited the the Kapok Tree way back in 1976. First time ever in Florida. Remember it well. Was daydreaming this morning, and just thought of the Kapok tree. So I looked it up. Sorry to hear that it had closed.

I worked at the Kapok from 1996 to 1999 first as the janitor, which allowed me full access to all areas of the former restaraunt including all the rats and pigeons in the former kitchens! I worked during the Thoroughbred Music years until it was sold to Sam Ash. My memories include arriving one morning in a huge downpour after one of the branches of the Tree had fallen hitting the west side entrance area. It had been "repaired" but this morning the rain was too powerful and it came flooding in through the roof fast right onto a multi-thousand dollar bass guitar! We all pitched in to help that day.

Such memories. I went to The Kapok Tree in Clearwater when I was a child in the 70's and then again on my honeymoon in 1984. Too made the glasses lasted longer then the marriage - lol. LOVED reading your page. Such good memories of being there as a kid - so much too see, never minded waiting for a table. What a place!!

We went there 2 times as a kid on trips to clearwater beach. Those were the most memorable dining experiences of my life. As farm kids from Illinois corn fields, this was the height of fine dining. We must be rich!! Or so my brother and I thought! We would get the tall glasses with the curly straws that we had never seen before... the trees, the lights.. it was just awesome. We are going to go check it out again when visiting the area. Hopefully wont be too depressing. Thanks for the site, really made me nostalgic. Pat

Kapok Tree Inn was a very special place to my family when I was a teen and young adult. We would celebrate special occasions, including visiting family or friends from out of state. It was a great experience. So sorry it's not there now for others to have the same experience.

Thank you so much for creating this site!! The Kapok Tree Inn was one of my fondest memories of Florida as a child. I wanted to go back over and over. I remember asking my dad for a souvenir from the Inn because it was so magical to me. Imagine someplace like this sticking in a childs mind so clearly and holding it in such awe~it must've truely been something!! What a shame it isn't the same... Thank you again, for the memories, pictures and time you have put into this. I will be sharing this site with my children and all those whom I've shared the stories with in the past but had no pictures to back it up.

I still cherish the glasses from the tree. My favorite was the Davie, fl. gardens since I lived so close. I am glad to see someone rejunivated the beautiful gatdens and scens from the era.

I went there as a kid. We would visit relatives in the summer and they took us there. I remember the punch/juice drinks in big tall glasses. We had those glasses for years.
