Unfortunately I never had the chance to eat at The Kapok Tree, but nonetheless it will always be a special place for me. My dad would bring me to the Sam Ash music store almost every weekend because I was so totally obsessed with the ballrooms and all the "glamor" of the place. It reminded me of some old abandoned mansion that I was able to sneak around and pretend. For me it just brings back awesome memories my dad and I shared even though I never knew it as an eat establishment :-)

I used to eat there in the 80's when I would visit my Grandparents. They had a magician that would perform at each table.

I can remember going to the Kapok Tree in 1970 and was very surprised that it has closed. I do have memories of it being so beautiful. The dining areas were packed and the wait was worth the while...What a beautiful restaurant it was...

Oh how I miss The Kapok Tree Inn. I just came across a glass from there that was from 1984. We used to go there all the time when I was a kid & we vacationed in Florida. I used to have pics of our family there, but I can't find them. Glad to see good people presevered it.

So glad to have found this site! When I was growing up in the late 60's and through the 70's, my family (from KY) always vacationed in the St. Pete's beach area. We always ate at the Kapok Tree Inn, both the Clearwater location and the Madeira Beach location, too. That was always a "highlight" of our trips. Such a beautiful place, like a trip to Europe!! It's such a pity that it closed, but I'm glad at least that the garden's are still maintained. Next time we're in the area, we'll visit the gardens, and go back in time to fond memories. Thank you for setting up this site!!

The Kapok Tree was a special place we would go to once a year around Christmas time when me & my sister lived with my gradparents in Clearwater in'59 to'61. I was only 5 or 6 but I have great recall of that time of my young life in Florida and the pictures are great and bring back memories of how extravigent the place really was. I remenber waiting 3 hours on Cristmas day and commenting to my Gramma that I thought the food was OK but nothing special but that was not why we went there in the first place. I am a pretty good cook today and I was already a "food snob" at 5 or 6. Thanks so much for the site!!!!

My family always vacationed in St. Pete and then Tampa - my parent's best friends lived there. We always went to the Kapok Tree Inn while visiting and I was just in awe of the elegance of the place. When I was a very young girl, for 3 hours I thought I was a princess. Someone wanted a recipe of a drink. I don't know if you want the Planter's Punch but I kept my parent's huge glass for years and the recipe was on the glass. My parent's would let me have a tiny sip and I thought I was so grown up! It was a magical place to go growing up. I'm sad it isn't there anymore. Here is the recipe: Planters Punch Kapok Tree Inn 2 oz. orange juice 2 oz. pineapple juice 2 oz. sweetened lime juice 1¼ oz. white rum 1¼ oz. dark rum or amber rum 1¼ oz. Myers Jamaican rum 1 Tbs. grenadine

I wanted to add. I don't remember the year, but allowing Casino's in Clearwater was up for a vote. If it had passed that was the thought......The KapoK Tree would have been saved. Toward the end food quality went down and prices went up. We opened for lunch and there just wasn't enough people coming. The management team that was on board really helped destroy the place unfortunately. For Christmas employees got Kapok money that could be spent for dinners and at the gift shops. Remember, one on each side of the entrance. A guy named Andrew was awarded most valued employee and I was awarded second most valuable employee. It truly was an honor. In the hayday, we use to seat 1,600 people every 2hrs with a 2 or 3 hr wait. Doesn't sound possible does it?
