I worked at the Kapok Tree from 1976 until 1985. When I started there were over 100 servers and we used all 9 dining rooms. June Baumgardner was the owner (widowed). Trying to remember names, Debi, Winnie, Jim and Nita, Crystal......I had so much fun working there. Wherever I moved after that I always got any job I applied for when they saw I worked at the Kapok Tree for 9yrs. So glad I saw this site. Thank you for it.

I remember having dinner there. We have a couple of pictures of the Kapok Tree and I still have a glass from there. Wonderful memories of vacationing with family and friends in the mid 70's.

A show I am watching tonight triggered memories of the Kapok Tree so I went looking for information on how close to where I live it is. I am so disappointed to find none of them are still open. I went to the original Kapok tree in October 1971 for my first dinner as a married woman the day after my husband and I married. At that time I was simply amazed at the beauty and atmosphere there. We ate our simple but wonderful dinner on the ballcony over looking the Grand Ballroom. We like most got drinks in the vase style glasses to take home to remember the night by. Later we like many enjoyed a long walk in the beautiful gardens listening to the fountains almost singing in the background. It is a night and a place I will never forget. I am so sorry to hear that it is gone and want to Thank Ben for starting this wonderful site where people like me can share our memories of this wonderous resturant.

We lived in Safety Harbor for 7 years in the 70's. Took everyone who came to visit us to the Kapok Tree. Everyone was fasinated and loved it. I would like a recipe for the drink that we always got. I used to have it but can't find it now. We were back there about 3 years ago and so disappointed to find it closed.

It was nice to see some memories from the Kapok Tree Inn. In the 60's and 70's I was little and could always bring a friend to Florida. Alot of years it was 3 car loads of people to St. Pete beach where my cousins, grandparents and family stayed for 2 weeks. We couldn't wait to get to the Kapok Tree for the fruit drink in the big glass and walk outside. About 14 or 15 of our family would be there. Our grandparents gone now and some of our parents also, we sometimes sit and talk about the 2 week vaca every summer and we've wondered about the Kapok Tree. We all still have glasses from the fruit drink and talk about our fun times down in the south. I have researched and found alot of fun shops and stores we visited are now gone. But we still sit and talk about them just as if they are still there. Thanks for keeping the Kapok Tree alive for us.

Enjoyed the restaurant as a young married couple in the seventies. Came down to this area of Florida and were disappointed to see it is closed.

In the late 60's I was about 11 years old when my family ate at the Kapok Tree. It was a magical place, and has stayed in my memories, sparking my love of green checkerboard floors, huge plants, colored glass and ancient fountains. Always a fan of Greek mythology and stone lions, looking at the pictures here intrigues me. How much two evenings at such a magical place influenced a young girl's imagination! I hope one day to re-visit the "Tree." Thank you for this web-visit!

WOW great site....I was helping my mother clean out some cupboards in her house when i came across 5 Kapok tall Glasses and i immediately got online to search for anything on them and voila' I found this place. The pictures are great and a flood of memories hit me of the great meals and (fritters!) and the beautiful gardens and patios we would walk through after the meals, I remember feeling like we were royalty! Does anyone remember the naked cherub at the entrance to the dining area's? and the "Planters Punch" yum! I can still conjure up images of the items in the gift shops, how I wish it was still there. So thank you Ben!!!

I visited the Kapok Tree Restaurant in 1978. It made such an impression on me. I now winter in Clearwater and wish I could return for a meal. I am glad to finally find out where it was. Thank you!

I have fond memories of the Kapok Tree as a child with my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. We visited Florida often as I had relatives in the Tampa area. Every time we visited (which was at least once a year) we would go to the Kapok Tree. I marveled at the size of this wonderful tree. I was so overwhelmed as a child of the grandeur of the space and the food, as I remember, was absolutely wonderful. The shops to me as a young child were like nothing I had ever seen before. I miss it and wish it were still in business so that my husband, children and grandchildren could have some of my same memories.
